"Is milk gluten free? My daughter has recently been diagnosed with celiac disease. She is very fond of milk. Can I continue to give her milk even on a gluten free diet? Does milk have gluten?" - Diane S. - Des Moines, Iowa
Yes, plain milk is gluten free and your child can enjoy it daily. Milk is a dairy product and it certainly does not contain gluten. However, this does not give you the license of consuming all varieties of milk. With all varieties of milk, I mean the packed varieties of flavored milk. Mothers of all gluten intolerant children should remember that the flavors and preservatives added to pack flavored milk contain traces of gluten in them. Feeding such type of milk to your child would definitely expose them to gluten and make them sick. It is recommended that flavored milk should not be consumed unless the packaging reads as “gluten – free.”...continue reading
"Is barley gluten free? Can I eat barley even on a gluten free diet? I have celiac disease and cannot eat foods that contain gluten. I was wondering whether or not barley can be a part of my plate? Please advice." - Katie B. - North Bay, Ontario, Canada
Yes, barley contains gluten and cannot be included in your diet. Barley is one of the three main foods that contain gluten. The trio – wheat, rye and barley contain gluten and should be avoided by individuals who are on a gluten free diet. Whether or not barley contains gluten is a question that keeps haunting many individuals. The straight answer to this is a loud yes!! Barley does contain gluten. Gluten is present in the form of hordein in barley. With this being said, let us quickly understand what makes the individuals intolerant towards gluten.
Gluten intolerance is an autoimmune disease, where the body attacks its own immune system when gluten containing food is ingested. Certain individuals lack the enzymes necessary for digesting gluten and that causes all the trouble. Stefano Guandalini, who is a MD, director of University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center explains as to why gluten intolerance is on the rise in Western countries. He says, that children who grow up in super – clean environments do not get exposed to antigens in their developing stage. Their gut is always hygienically treated and is never taught to adjust to antigens. This causes their immune system to act differently with gluten, causing them to suffer from gluten intolerance. He also adds that gluten intolerance is a rare sight in developing and less – hygienic countries....continue reading
"Is butter gluten free? I have been diagnosed with celiac disease and am really facing problems with the gluten free diet. I love adding butter in many dishes but am afraid to use it after being diagnosed. But, I still wish to continue having butter in my diet. Can you tell me whether butter contains gluten or not? So is there gluten in butter?" - Mike S. - San Fransico, California
Yes, plain butter is gluten free and you can continue to enjoy butter in your daily diet. Butter is a milk product and milk is gluten free and so is plain butter. Why am I saying plain butter, simply because, there are many varieties of butter than do contain gluten in them. Hence, we need to be very careful when we say that butter is gluten free. Plain butter can definitely be incorporated in your gluten free recipes to make them taste better. Plain butter is harmless from a gluten perspective and can easily be cherished by gluten intolerant population....continue reading

How do I start a gluten free diet? – is another one of the more common questions I get on a regular basis. Individuals with celiac disease often get confused as to how to begin eating gluten free. The answer to this is pretty simple and you need to follow these 5 simple tips to get started.
Tip 1 - Thorough Kitchen clean – up: Your preliminary step towards a gluten free diet would be to clean up your kitchen and discard of or give away all those ingredients that contain gluten. You need to understand this simple fact very well: even a small morsel of gluten can make you sick and hence it is necessary that you discard all those food items that contain gluten. You are also required to purchase your fresh pack of condiments, in case the earlier ones might have been contaminated with gluten. This is not all; you also have to purchase new toaster and thoroughly wash all dishes, pans pans and cooking utensils.
Tip 2 - Plan out a week’s meal in advance:...continue reading

It isn't a dumb question at all. You are not alone with your diagnosis and being new to Celiac Disease and gluten intolerance creates plenty of questions. About 1% of the population suffers from the disease. To answer your question, wheat is not gluten free.
Perhaps I should answer the question what is gluten? Gluten is found in wheat and its products and hence you need to stay away from it to be healthy.
